  • Mario Green and Mary Brown from Riverside High School give up several hours each week to help others. 河畔中学的马里奥?格林和玛丽?布朗每周都腾出几个小时来帮助他人。 “from Riverside High School” 是介词短语做定语,翻译的时候,先翻译定语。“give up” 在这里是“抽出(时间)”的意思。
  • I get such a strong feeling of satisfaction when I see the animals get better and the look of joy on their owners' faces"每当我看到那些动物们好起来,还有他们主人脸上喜悦的表情,一种强烈的满足感便油然而生。 “get better” 是动词不定式作宾语补足语,作宾语补足语的动词不定式一般有to,但如果谓语动词是“感官动词”或“使役动词”, 宾语补足语的动词不定式就不带to。
  • Mary is a book lover. She could read by herself at the age of four. 玛丽爱读书。她四岁就能够独立阅读了。当一个名词不是职业或身份时,这个名词往往译成动词。“a book lover” 显然不是职业或身份,故译成“爱读书”
  • she decided to try out for a volunteer after-school reading program. 去年她决定参加一个课外阅读项目的志愿者选拔。“to try out for” 为…去尝试。这里不定式作动词decide的宾语。
  • She still works there once a week to help kids learn to read. 她仍然一周去那里一次,帮助孩子们学习阅读。“to help kids learn to read”是动词不定式作状语。说明“一周去那里一次”的目的。所以我们把它称作“目的状语”
  • I can do what I love to do and help others at the same time.” 我可以做我喜欢的事情,同时又帮助了别人。“what I love to do”是名词性从句作do的宾语。What引导的名词性从句在英语里很常见。如:what you saw yesterday is quite different from what you heard before. 以后学了定语从句之后就好理解了。
  • I'm sure you know that this group was set up to help disabled people like me. 我相信你知道这个组织是为像我这样的残疾人而成立的。 “this group was set up”是一个被动结构。
  • You helped to make it possible for me to have Lucky. 你的帮助使得我能够拥有‘‘幸运儿”。 “ make it possible for me to have Lucky”中的it是形式宾语。它的真实宾语是“for me to have Lucky.”
  • Lucky makes a big difference to my life. “幸运儿”令我的生活发生了极大的改变,“makes a big difference”是“makes a difference” 拓展而来的。
  • …so normal things like answering the telephone, opening and closing doors, or carrying things are difficult for me. 所接听电话、开关门、扛(拿)东西这样普通的事情对我来说都是困难的。 后置介词短语“like answering the telephone, opening and closing doors, or carrying things”修饰了things. 去掉介词短语之后就成了“…normal things are difficult for me”.
